Introducing: Klout Topic Expertise and International Expansion

Since Klout joined forces with Lithium in 2014, we’ve all been working tirelessly to imagine what the next phase of the Klout experience could be. Well, friends, that day has come.

 

We’ve listened to your feedback, and we’re excited to begin unveiling a number of enhancements to Klout. In a digital world full of noise, these features bring more context to the Klout Score by helping people make better decisions and creating greater trust in whom to follow and in topics that are most relevant to them.

We’re introducing a new way to discover the most influential subject matter experts on social media. This feature will make it easier for people to make personal decisions based on the right context and with a higher degree of trust, based on the expertise of the people they choose to follow. By adding this new dimension to Klout Scores, we hope to ultimately pave the way for our users to have better, more immersive, more meaningful, and more relevant experiences with brands and each other.

The search tool on Klout.com, which had improved upon the relaunch with topic experts a few weeks ago, has now become unreliable.  This has been for the past 2 days.

 

For example, normally, if you search for a member's first name then started to type the last name, the instant search results would narrow down the choices with each character typed.  

 

Currently searching for a member's first name last name often yields no results.    Now the search seems to prefer Last names.   Instant Search does not work on partial last names. You have to type out the complete last name before there's a match now.

The Klout Android app reports the user's score as an integer, while it reports the 1-day change, 90-day low, and 90-day high to two decimal places.

@wittier Thank You Ken, for your time..   I have been trying to locate (with the Klout search bar) @ChefRamsey/Chef Ramsay..

 

and no luck.. This makes it a little hard to repay the Klout.. The same thing is Happening with Chef Julia/@ChefJulia.

 

I did try putting the Twitter @ in front, that did not work.. when I was looking up Rick Yager @tripletsfan19  

 

it said nothing matched the search,,  His Twitter handle did work...

Prior to 3 days ago, we could type Rick Y and find Rick Yager in Instant Search results below the search box.

 

Now we cannot type the full name Rick Yager to find Rick Yager.   We can't even type the full name Rick Yager [ENTER] to find him.  Klout Search acts like he does not exist even if we type his whole name perfectly.

 

Typing @tripletsfan19 (Rick Yager's twitter handle) will not work.

 

We can type: tripletsfan19 in full (without @) to find him.  There is no instant search that narrows the results as we type each character now.  We get one shot. Type the full twitter handle exactly right without the @ to find someone.  

 

We can also type the full name Yager.  Instant search will not find him as you are typing until you type the full last name only spelled exactly right.

 

We cannot type Yager Rick.  We can only type the full last name and stop or the full twitter handle and stop.

 

So search is much more restrictive and less helpful now than it was 3 days ago.

 

Search was really good (and greatly improved) starting on the day that they launched Topic Expertise a few weeks ago, as we all noticed at that time.

 Hi @wittier and @cindycapo -- yet again, thank you for your keen eyes. Our infrastructure team performed some migrations a couple days ago, and in turn the indexes that allow search are still rebuilding. They'll be back up soon.

Hi @wittier and @cindycapo -- with regard to the topical and general Klout scores, please keep in mind that while the models are always evolving in the direction of greater stability at a macro level, individual users will always experience moments of perceived volatility -- and even if they have a comparatively high score. This can be for any number of reasons including, but not limited to:

 

1) gaps in the data provided by the network, e.g. because of privacy settings or glitchiness on their side

2) scored content dropping out of the 90D scoring window

3) transient glitches in machines hard at work processing billions of signals every day

4) ephemeral shifts and topical spikes in the content created by the population as a whole

 

Because of this, I encourage you to be wary of extrapolating large inferences from small sample sets, even if (and in some cases especially if) those sample sets come from highly engaged individuals.

 

With regard to topics, please also keep in mind that we're evaluating topical expertise based off the content you've created during the last 90 days, which makes it even more granular and prone to statistical and temporal variation. If you posted some very engaging content about a topic 80-90 days ago and not as much recently, then your score will drop as that content leaves the scoring window.

@JamesL How can a member be listed as a Top Expert in a Topic but then not have an Expert badge on that Topic on his profile, when the Topic does appear on his profile?

@wittier @JamesL Thank you both for your expertise... @wittier does make a good point.. How can we be Top Expert in a Topic if it is not a posted Expert Topic that and does appear on our profile?

Hi @wittier -- can you provide an example of this and I'll research it? It's possible for someone to be a Top Expert according to our algorithm, but to not have that selected that topic for their public profile, though if the topic is present and they're an expert, then it should automatically appear.

 

In this case, I would need examples in order to research this.
