It’s that time of year again: a time of unbridled excitement and quiet reflection, of hope and expectation. Yes, LiNC ’14 registration is NOW open!
This year’s LiNC theme is NOW and it’s very timely. As a theme, it’s both immediate and amorphous. It’s a bit like the quote from the cult classic film The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai, “no matter where you go...there you are.” And, regardless of what your iPhone or “clock-bracelet” says, the time is always NOW. Though, in this case NOW is about working together to address the increasing urgency and expectations facing our customers, while providing real world examples and solutions to help them deliver the best possible customer experiences. NOW, is a promise.
For those who haven’t yet attended, describing LiNC is like our theme – it goes beyond simple words and has to be experienced in the moment. It’s easier to list what LiNC is NOT? It is NOT your standard user’s conference where one narcolepsy-inducing, canned, pitch after another quietly saps your will to live. Instead, LiNC is about the energy that’s created when a community driven by personal experience, inspiration and innovation comes together in a singular place and time.
While this is only my third LiNC, it is perhaps the 200 th event in which I’ve participated. You would think that might leave me cynical and jaded. But, LiNC is different and I think I know why – it’s the community stupid (me, not you!) Our community of customers, partners and employees bring the proverbial “it” every year with the passion of the converted – they are believers in the idea that what we all do, not only matters, but also is profoundly changing the way businesses, brands and customers connect, engage and communicate. And, it’s all happening NOW.
If you were to ask me the best time to register for LiNC, I’d say, “NOW.” But you’d also have to know that my watch (clock-bracelet) runs about ten minutes fast. See you in the future.

We’re headed to Los Angeles for Forrester’s Forum for Customer Experience Professionals West, October 9-10, which is about “boosting your customer experience to the next level.” Sounds promising, yeah? Well, it is with the exception of those companies who have yet to really embrace and engage their customers through social media.
We know that corporations that tap into their socially empowered customers stand to gain advantage on their socially reluctant competitors in ways beyond just reducing customer support costs. They’ve realized that customer engagement means real, topline growth and that customers who actively engage with brands, products and services are not only loyal advocates, they also spend more.
So, why are some companies still reluctant to jump in? Maybe they’re in regulated or mature industries? The fact is that it doesn’t matter. If your business wants to continue to succeed, you need to innovate and grow and to do that you need to get serious about social. And if you don’t, maybe we’ll see you at this event next year, and maybe we won’t...

As the event organizers position it, SXSW is “Five days of compelling presentations from the brightest minds in emerging technology, scores of exciting networking events hosted by industry leaders, the SXSW Trade Show and an unbeatable lineup of special programs showcasing the best new digital works, video games and innovative ideas the international community has to offer.”
Okay, that’s a pretty bold assertion. What’s the real deal?
My observations: SXSW is part conference, part festival. And, as a SXSW newbie this past March, the big question that I had (like many others) heading in to Austin was “Is this event worth our presence and participation?” Now, in retrospect, my answer to that question is an emphatic “Yes!”
So, while I’ve heard people debate the business value of the event, my own experience confirms that the event clearly has solid value - not just for market presence, but for building relationships with influencers and partners too. And, all of our customers are there as well. My new perspective regarding SXSW is how could any innovative, relevant, company afford not to be there?
Clearly, I’m not the only one who feels this way:
