Blog Post
Interesting for sure, you would think the feed would be based on new content based on the newest first publish date/time not based on last modified. This does remind me that I need to eventually post my own findings from when we A/B tested gating all community solutions.
at risk of veering too far off-topic - I should mention - "newest topics" does what you are thinking about CyJervis - in the content feed.
But the "most recent" option includes all updates.
I don't yet remember why I chose to leave Most Recent on...could have been a reason or could have been "leave defaults in place until I prove I don't want it"?
Maybe NickH can provide some guidance.

Most recent mimicks an activity stream where discussions with new active replies or solutions will bump back up to the top. Generally it’s good for discussion boards where there is often more value in the replies / discussion than in the root post. For kb and blog boards - unless you are really trying to drive collaboration and 2 way dialog, it likely makes sense to use newest topics - or now KB chapters as a way to browse and organize, maybe relegating the recent content list to the sidebar titled recent activity or recent comments. Ultimately all the options should be there or configure different boards for their use cases based on volume, activity, etc.
