Thanks, Jacob. I appreciate the invitation to jump into the fray.

It's been an interesting few weeks, and a lot surge of work, interest, and activity for us community folks as so many people have moved online in various ways. As my work day is winding down today, I'm spinning up my re-jiggering plans for virtualizing this week's Dinner5 event. Lots of things going on.

But yes, I'm here to answer any and all questions however I can. I've been working with community and super fans for 20+ years ...since "community" meant convincing clients to put an email address on their web site. (A hard sell at one point because... ya know... "What happens if they contact us??")

Interested to hear how you're moving a very intimate dinner experience into the virtual world! I get the image of Sims in my mind...

I'll be interested to see how it goes too! Ha.

FWIW: here's my guiding principles as I move to the virtual event:

  • The mission remains the same: Dinner5 was founded to bring senior community leaders together in a small group of 5 people for connection and camaraderie. That mission is still job 1. Every decision I'm making, every bit of prep work is, like all good community programs, keeping that at the forefront
  • The vibe is transferring: Dinner5 in-person has always been focused around a culinary experience that is amazing...it gives a focal point that people can really get excited about and gives something attendees can connect over, in the moment at the table and the days after the event. So I've worked hard to try to design that into the virtual experience too. Together with the support of my amazing sponsors (Vanilla Forums and Social Factor, in particular), each attendee will get a fat gift card to an awesome local restaurant (TenTen sushi) for use when they are able and comfortable returning to the outside world. When they go, they will also get a little something extra courtesy of TenTen and my prep work. TenTen was happy to do it, and it's possible because I asked. Always ask. Most people don't just ask.
  • Virtual events still need physical stuff: I'm sending a day-of cookie and milk delivery to make the experience tangible. I've seen a LOT of people asking the question "if my event goes virtual, do I still need to send physical goods?" YES. This isn't a way to cut your budgets, damn it! Send goodies, send swag. Delight the attendees!
  • Be a great party host: Going virtual is a new set of party hosting skills, because hosting a Zoom call is different (obviously) than hosting an in-person gathering. But also, it's not 100% different either. It's still a party. It's still hosting. Don't give up one world in lieu of the other. Blend the best of both.

The first Virtual Dinner5 is tomorrow... I'm still working out the pre-event details, and I'm going to be very honest with the attendees at the start of the event (and it's an event, not a "call") that I'm learning on the fly. I'm going to invite them to experience the ride WITH me, not to let me do all the work alone. Yes, I'm the host, but I'm also part of the group along with them.

We'll see how it goes and I'll report back after.

FYI: I'm going to be discussing the event with Rachel Happe on her new podcast on Friday, so please tune in to hear more!
