To be GDPR compliant, do users have to opt-in to receive community emails?

Hi,

 

I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on the distinction between a marketing email and automated email from the community (i.e. new post on a thread) with respect to GDPR.  Would users have to explicitly opt in to receive automated emails from the community based on their activity? Or, are those considered operational emails?

I doubt forum notifications would be considered marketing unless you include sales content in the templates.
