Broadcasting Facebook Live / Periscope through Lithium Community

Hello friends,

Every week our company broadcasts a live Q&A chat through both Periscope and Facebook Live.

I am wondering if there's a way to live stream / broadcast either of these platforms through the Lithium Community platform?

At the moment, a lot of our discussion board users won't look at social channels but having these broadcast through our Community might go a way to solving that.

Thanks,
Alan

Hi @AlanA, apologies for the late response! You can embed the codes for these respective sources in community. Depending on how your community is structured and what these events are, you can embed them in blogs or posts, and promote them within the community.

Thanks for the info, @JennC. So, is it a case of waiting for the broadcasts to go-live and then grabbing the code and creating a Community post?

It'd be super helpful if there was some way to set this up before the broadcast went live as I would hate for the Community to miss out on the first minutes while we set up a Community post.

Thanks,
Alan

@AlanA I did some research and couldn't find a definitive answer for Periscope and Facebook, but I think it depends on the capabilities of the tool you use. For example, I've used Hangouts before, which is super easy and comes with an embed code you can use ahead of time. Once the video is embedded, it'll play when the Hangout goes live.

You could always try testing it out on a private board, and evaluate the functionality of different tools there.

Hi Jenn,

Thanks for the suggestion, sounds like a great way to test it out, will look at that.

Alan

Hi Alan,

Did you try this out with Periscope and if so how did it go?

We're also looking at hosting Facebook Live / Periscope on the community too but want to know if it can be prepared in advance.

Best,

Amy

Hi @amycatling

Didn't get to try it yet, unfortunately. Have you made any progress?

Hi @AlanA,

I couldn't work this out in time for our events so kept our Periscope feed on social and added a highlights video on to the community at the end of each day.

The above shows when we add the embed code to the HTML section in a board post or a blog post.

We'd like to get the video to show in the embed.

Hi @doug_ebay

I'm pretty sure script tags are disabled for security reasons. I think a custom component in Studio (or a Custom Content Element that can be manipulated in Admin with your embed code) would be a way forward here.

Thanks,

Thanks @PaoloT!

We have the same issue with iframe code too...some will work, some doesn't. I suspect it's some Facebook setting when the video is uploaded to Facebook, but can't figure it out.

This works:

<p><iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fajplusenglish%2Fvid..." width="500" height="281" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" style="border: none; overflow: hidden;" allowtransparency="true"></iframe></p>

This doesn't:

<p><iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FeBayForBusiness%2Fv..." width="560" height="315" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" style="border: none; overflow: hidden;" allowtransparency="true"></iframe></p>

@PaoloT, any idea why we would get this message? We do Facebook live vids, and get the share URL, but we get this error message when trying to add to a post. Happens for videos LIVE, and videos that have ended, after right clicking to get the share URL.

video cant be embedded.PNG
Another option could be to upload vids to YouTube after they have ended, but ideally we'd like to get the Facebook livesteam working on a community post during events.

Thanks!

Doug

We normally use iframe to embed in a post. That seems to work well.

Thanks @spenumaka that does seem to work in theory, but we still get an error message with our vids. Must be some Facebook setting or something.
