Guidelines for profile images / when to ask a user to adjust their profile image?

Hello!

Curious if any of you have specific guidelines for user-uploaded profile images that you could share. I've just realized that our community guidelines don't have any specifics about that, and I'd like to add some. We don't do pre-moderation of images, but when images are brought to our attention, I'd like to have a chunk in the guidelines to point users to.

Here's a specific case for you - this user: https://community.meraki.com/t5/user/v2/viewprofilepage/user-id/1139 - check out his profile image. It's actually in reference to the show Archer, but I'm not big on having a profile picture with a big "ISIS" on it. Thoughts?

Thanks!!

Hi @CarolineS,

We generally recommend to surface directly in the guidelines a general statement towards respectful conduct on the community. Sometimes this is referred to as a "Netiquette". E.g. you will find the Lithium Community Terms of Service - linked from the Lithium Community Guidelines - contain a whole section about conduct which covers text and image contributions.

I was having a look at your guidelines and although there are a few steps to cover three documents couldn't find anything that prevents abusive content, apart from anything that breaks the law. Your guidelines state:

By using these forums, you agree to follow these rules as well as the full Terms of Use for the Meraki Community.

..and the ToU further state:

Your registration for and use of an account will be governed by the Meraki End Customer Agreement, available at http://www.meraki.com/support/#policies:eca

link to the Cisco Meraki Terms of Use. You might want to review this set of guidelines and policies together with your legal team.

On the Skype Community I was working previously on the goal was to have a base EULA that every customer adhered to when they signed up their account. This already covered the code of conduct that then applied to all services the customer would use with the brand (including community). See the Microsoft Services Agreement as an example: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/servicesagreement

Now to the example profile picture you linked: Even with a stronger code of conduct in place I couldn't see where it would be violating any of those. As you already pointed out the word or abbreviation "isis" has various meanings and this picture doesn't seem to make a supporting statement to the most recent negative group bearing that name. It could even be a trolling attempt to draw attention by getting the picture moderated, so I would recommend just leaving it as is. 🤷‍♂️

Thanks so much for the thorough response, @ClaudiusH! Much appreciated. I think you're right that we shouldn't do anything with this particular image, and I'll look into updating our community guidelines / TOU per your recommendations.

Agree with @ClaudiusH. You want a more general statement that gives the Community Team some leeway in judging inappropriate content. You can't foresee every type of image or language a user may come up with.
