Macro's -What, why and how?

I am  trying to read up on Macro's to get a better understanding  of what, why and how in using them.  Does anyone have any input or link to an article that could help me ?

Our Superusers use macros to store answers to the most FAQ in our Community. That way they can answer questions at scale without typing out each answer, or storing it elsewhere and having to C&P it each time.
