Signature permissions by Rank/Role

I found the following topics when searching through the lithium community regarding a signature that I found interesting, but would like clarification if there can be more flavors depending on rank/role.

http://community.lithium.com/t5/Customer-Connection/How-to-assign-a-signature-based-on-role/m-p/1080...

When I test a signature as an admin I can have as much content and line breaks as I wish, but as a new user I can only have 1 line until the first line break. There appears to be a setting that allows this but am not clear where this is, or if I can assign varying degrees of signature based on role/rank.

Is there a configuration which would allow more flexibility the the higher the rank of ther users? i.e. a new person has 1 line, 2nd tier has 2 lines, 3rd tier has 3 lines, .... superuser can use entire signature box like an admin user.

On a similar note, I'm guessing there are standard alerts people get when they reach a new rank, and one of the items we could include is they now have access to "X" lines in their signature. Thanks for the clarification.

The settings for allowable signature sizes are in Admin > Users > Profile Defaults:

  • Maximum height for signatures (pixels)
  • Maximum width for signatures
  • Units for the maximum signature width

These are blanket settings that apply to all users unless the Bypass signature size restrictions permission is granted.

@BrianOblinger Thanks for the quick reply. So if I understand you correctly there is 1 setting that applies to all users, and there is bypass which allows for as much signature as you wish (i.e. admins role is on bypass). Can the bypass for specific ranks or roles? It appears to be applied to roles at the moment in my testing. Can you clarify how the bypass can be used? Thanks again for your help.

Yes, typically the ability to bypass the restrictions are for a specific set(s) of trustworthy users. You can grant them for specific roles if you choose.

If you want to setup a situation where users can automatically earn the ability to bypass the restrictions based on tenure or level of participation, you could create a role that grants the bypass and then add it to the Roles Granted field in the rank editor. When a user reaches that rank they will be granted the role, which in turn gives them the permission to bypass restriction.

@tmarshall Unfortunately the email notification for a rank up is generic - it is a template that is always the same regardless of what rank the user achieves. So you cannot set it up so that it advises what perks they have been granted for that particular rank up (although this would be great). You would have to do this elsewhere in the community.

You can edit the email template in Studio  > Text Editor > Email Text The template is called "Rank change user notification". There is also a setting that enables these notifications. To enable, select Community Admin > Users > Ranking > Send an email when a user''s rank changes.

Hope that is helpful,

Jason

Hello - trying to manage signatures in our Community. We currently do not allow lower ranked users to have access to add their own signature. This is managed through rank/role.

One of our users pointed out to us that this only defines the signature on the desktop platform, not the mobile platform. If one goes into 'My Account', the final tab on the right is 'Mobile'  and one can edit their signature there.

Is there a way to restrict the 'Mobile' signature from being used in rank/role settings (or elsewhere)?
