We have the Active Areas component on our home page. I am wondering more about what count is listed under each label.
Posts: Is this a count of all root posts (Topics or Articles) in the board or does it include comments as well?
New: Is this a count of all root posts (Topics or Articles) in the board or does it include comments as well? How long is something new?
Recent: Is this a count of all root posts (Topics or Articles) in the board or does it include comments as well? How long is something new? Is it 30 days? Does it exclude the New ones? Is it only root posts or does it count comments/replies as well?
I periodically mark everything in a board as read but it only affects the "new" column. The recent column doesn't change.

Hi, did you ever find out what the parameters are for this component, I am interested in using it but want to know what shows and what doesn't so we can explain this to our members too.
@MarkAtTruth @elbranscomb
Here you go
Posts: Yes, it includes comments as well(Topics+comment)
New: Yes, it includes comments as well(Topics+comment). It will be new for you untill you visit that post.
Recent: Yes, it is count of total posts including comments and new one. It shows all posts under Recent tab which are posted in last 7 days.
Thanks that's helpful @VikasB ! Only Topics or Articles as well?
Related to the component but a different question:
Do you know of any way to exclude certain boards from the Active Areas component? We have the same couple boards always show up and without showing the top 7-10 I'd like to exclude a couple of the most visited boards and show some of the less common boards that have recent activity.
Thanks for explaining that super helpful. In the New section is the expectation then that if the viewer visits any of the new posts then this # will adjust down towards 0 if no other new posts are added in the interim.
@elbranscomb
Yes, you are right. It will show 0 if you have visited all posts. And will increase if someone add any new post in the board.
@elbranscomb Coming to your questions -
Only Topics or Articles as well?
- Yes, articles as well.
Do you know of any way to exclude certain boards from the Active Areas component?
- No such settings. You can achieve it using custom development. You can create the same component using Khoros standard APIs and can include/exclude boards as per your requirement.
And another way is, hide the board from lists and menus. Admin > Community Structure > Hover on the board which you want to exclude > Edit Properties > Hide from lists and menus. But doing so, it will be visible nowhere so it does not make sense to do this.
