Decreased member registrations but healthy community

Hello!

We are seeing a decrease in the member registrations gradually. There was an increase in the registrations when a new product was launched (about 2 months ago) but then it started to decrease again. However, our CHI score has been pretty consistent.

We do not see any drastic change in the traffic and the liveliness scores as well. The metrics indicate a healthy community and this has got me thinking. Any suggestions?

Re: Decreased member registrations but healthy community

Are you sure these are gradual changes and not jumps? Also if gradual changes: are we talking about small decreases over months or weekly fluctuation?

With mature communities reaching a certain level of "content saturation" (== there's already discussions or solutions for the common questions and topics) it is somewhat expected that there will be less of an incentive to register at the community. This doesn't make your community less healthy though.

Also particularly if you have an SSO setup for authentication you can see your community registration metrics react quite heavily even to small changes in the user experience there. The  best way to understand what is happening is by consulting the web analytics tool of your choice to understand at which point along the journey which amount of possible registrants are dropping out.

Re: Decreased member registrations but healthy community

Hi ClaudiusH,

I would say it is a gradual decrease over the past months and not a sudden jump. I will search for the 'Content Saturation' posts to know about it more.

Thanks for your inputs. I guess my next move is to look at the registration flow to understand better.

It shouldn’t be too long, but please note that it’s just before a holiday so there may be a slight delay.

Re: Decreased member registrations but healthy community

I wouldn't be too concerned at all. Whenever there is a promotion, a product launch or an unwanted incident - "events" - there is often a spike in membership.
Meanwhile, your existing customers have already joined, so we can't ask them to join again. And they aren't leaving. They are still members and you still have net adds at the end of each week.

  • Are registrations at the same level as they were before your launch 2 months ago? In which case, that's fine.
  • Member Entrances. Are the people who have joined coming back?
  • Are you actively promoting membership? Is there a call to community in the installation of new products?
  • Are vast numbers of new members what you need to succeed? Or is the community happy with a handful of specialists?
  • Ensure that you're involved in each product launch, and as long as your community is healthy you should be able to keep ticking on in-between these "Events"
