Hi all Community customers,

With the announcement from Oracle that AddThis will be decommissioned on May 31st, 2023, we will be ending our support of the AddThis share button on Community Classic.

There are no plans to replace the current functionality in Classic or Aurora at this time, given the unexpected deprecation of AddThis from Oracle, our current roadmap priorities and lower usage of the feature. As we evaluate the 2024 roadmap later this year, please share your thoughts and questions about our plans with regards to the Share button.

This change will automatically be applied to all communities beginning with the 23.5 release and beyond. We will be removing the following components from the code base and all community pages:

  • <component id="external.widget.add-this"/>
  • <component id="external.widget.share-button"/>
  • <component id="message-view.widget.share-button"/>
  • <component id="share-button"/>

Additionally, the setting “Display social bookmarking links” will be turned off and removed from Community Admin.

To turn off this setting now on your stage & production sites (test on stage first!):

  1. Go to Admin > ”applicable discussion style”.
  2. Uncheck the Display social bookmarking links option.
  3. Click Save

If you experience any styling issues when you remove the “Share button” by configuring this setting, please open a Support ticket with Khoros or if you have a development team you work with, you may work with them directly to address.

LeandraN Within the "Discussion Styles" tab, this setting lives in different discussion style areas (Forum, Blog, TKB) - You'll see that setting in those different areas so I'd double check in each!

Parvez_AL We do not have a supported alternative OOTB as a replacement for a share button functionality with the deprecation of AddThis. We are exploring options but we do not have plans at this time to reintroduce this as an out of the box option in Classic or Aurora.

As soon as we do, we will let everyone know in Atlas.

One option you have now is to leverage custom components to add your own share button, there are alternatives to AddThis on the web but none have been officially vetted or supported by Khoros.

To be honest this wasn't a big deal for us, we removed the add this components about two years ago due to privacy concerns. We now have our own custom share buttons that doesn't rely on any outside service. This also means we aren't dropping any cookies (a real battle over here) and it gives us more control over our social shares.

Add this is great if you want to have a share button for every network, app or program out there but for the most part we just needed:

    • Linkedin
    • Facebook
    • Twitter
    • Reddit
    • Email

I am sure others have rolled their own as well using a 3rd party service and a custom component.

  • LarryI  can you tell me where 'applicable discussion style' lives in the admin panel? I can seem to find it.

    Thanks!

    EDIT: Nevermind, found it!

  • LarryI , is there any alternate Khoros out of box social sharing option we can use now as Add no longer works

  • Oh wow, we had no idea until our icons broke. We even had a case opened, and support didn't seem to know at first, and our account team never brought it up. Easily disabled in both stage and production. We do hope this will be revisited as we used that social share feature.
