Here is two documents that could help you to design your community:
- First some general concepts to complete what Nathan was saying.
- Then the Lithium Customization Guide (which might look frightening at first sight but very helpful to understand how CSS works with Lithium)
Regarding your blog page, you should look at the message section (p33) of the Lithium customization guide.
