have you tried with (for a user with appropriate permissions)
/boards/id/<CONTEST ID>settings/name/contest.media_type
Not sure if this is supported for contest creation via REST. You can try passing it in the post request and see if it works, I have not tried it.

Yes, the REST API to get media type of a contest is
http://<community>/restapi/vc/boards/id/<contest-id>/settings/name/contest.media_type
.
I forgot to update this thread but that was the API I used and it works fine.
