Was wondering if anyone has had a need to disable the built-in function of automatically marking a topic as read as soon as a user lands on the topic detail page. We have a need to add custom specific criterias to post topics in order for them to be marked as read, not just landing on the page, thus the need for this.

You can update the settings from Community Admin.
Goto: Admin > Users > Profile Defaults:

You can also mark the post read using some customization after defining your criteria and conditions and use below API to mark that message/post to be read:

Thanks Parshant . I took a look at this after you pointed it out, and at first glance this does appear to be what i needed. However, it also appears that this feature is configurable by the end user, which would ultimately allow users to bypass our additional criteria to mark a topic as read.
I'm still looking to disable "mark as read" for all posts within a certain node, that is not bypass-able by the enduser if at all possible. If there isnt an easy way, i'll contact support to see if there is a "switch" on their end...
