We did something similar few years ago. But we did it from the browser frontend ajax post to the restapi v1.
You mentioned you are building a mobile app. I don't think you can ajax directly from inside mobile app to the restapi.
Anyway, I am attaching the network log from the staging site I built. We can build image embedded into the post body, instead of an attachment.
