    Also, including 

    <#setting url_escaping_charset='ISO-8859-1'>

     fixed my problem. Kind of a pain but not a huge problem.

    true, on the other side FreeMarker docs says this should be set in the underlying Java code, so Lithium core should set that to prevent errors like that and having us to fix this in freemarker.
