How to invite non-community members to a Group

Not covered in this documentation: https://community.lithium.com/t5/Groups/Invite-or-add-members-to-a-group/tac-p/426566

There is an email template called 'group_external_invite' mentioned here (https://community.lithium.com/t5/Developer-Knowledge-Base/Email-template-context-objects/ta-p/75924)

How does one use this feature?

  • ttadej - I don't think so this email template is for that purpose, seems like the non-group members. Also, for a user to join a group, he should also be a member of the community already. So, if we go by this, to invite the external users to the group, they should be first invited to the community, then the groups. Since the group sends the invites by usernames, not by email, so the user should be registered in the community.

    I hope this helps.

  • I'm looking for alternative ways of doing this.

One option would be to email a coupon code to non-members and ask them to join the community and then join a closed group via a custom page with a coupon field and a join group button. But Lithium tells us there's no API call to join a group, so the custom page idea won't work.

    Any other suggestions?

Use case: We can usually get a lot of attendees to our annual customer conference to join our community by offering them attendee-only content via a private group. In Jive we can email them an invitation to join the private group, and we're trying to replicate this in Lithium as part of our migration.
