Is it possible to remove the TKB articles from the 'Recent posts' and 'Recent topics' components?

Unfortunately, I don't believe there's a way to specify more than one interaction style in that manner.

What you could do instead is construct your own search query to fine tune the messages you're getting, and plug that search query into the "forums.widget.message-list-panel" which will display the messages for you. See here for an example of how this works:

If you wanted topic root messages in forums and blogs, sorted by date descending, your query would look something like:

/search/messages?q=is_root:true&include_forums=true&include_blogs=true&sort_by=-topicPostDate

For example:

http://lithosphere.lithium.com/restapi/vc/search/messages?q=is_root:true&include_forums=true&include_blogs=true&sort_by=-topicPostDate
