Unfortunately, this is not currently possible. However, there are a couple of new context objects in beta right now that could be used for this purpose once available to you:
I'd suggest keeping an eye on the Lithium.now blog for the release notes of upcoming versions to see when these context objects are officially released:

We have also added support for this type of xml loading as a customization through Professional Services in the past. You can create a case to get more information if you are interested. Thanks!

Indeed, this could be a solution too. I will think about the best way to do what my client want and ask him to create a case if needed.

We are looking for the same implementation and we need to serve the XML feed from Google calendar to get the events. The public URL of the calendar is https://www.google.com/calendar/feeds/varun.luthra.72%40gmail.com/public/basic from which we need to get the event details. How to go about this in the custom component using the Freemarker?
