does this call fullfil your requirements?
http://community.lithium.com/restapi/vc/users/self/mailbox/notes/inbox/unread/count
and then
http://community.lithium.com/restapi/vc/users/self/mailbox/notes/inbox/unread
to get the list of unread messages.
