Sorry I just figured it out on my own! I can use the idea's id and then plug it into messages/count REST call
http://community.lithium.com/community-name/restapi/vc/threads/id/45/messages/count
I actually have a further question. Is there a way to return the number of comments/replies when the information about the top messages are returned - as in the rest call example below? So there doesn't need to be a second REST call to obtain the number of comments?
