REST: extracting avatar images

As soon as I know, there is no way to retrieve info about users in role and their avatars by one request.
But you can iterate through the list of users and
request user avatar by the following url:
http://community.futureshop.ca/restapi/vc/users/id/387/profiles/avatar/url

You may be able to setup an Endpoint to do this

Currently i'm not sure how to create 2 requests for different RestAPI calls.
the first request is getting a list of Top Kudo Authors. This can be done.
The second request is to extract the ID from each Kudo Author and inject it using another RestAPI call

Check out this TKB article on how to combine multiple REST API calls into an endpoint:
The example is there is actually a very similar use case, so hopefully it will help you get started!
The main downside of using an endpoint in this case is that you would have to request the data via JavaScript/Ajax instead of being able to pull it directly into a custom component. If you were planning to use the data outside the community, then that wouldn't really be a concern.
