Last week I started using the SDK and got stuck when trying to upload my plugin to the staging environment. I get the following error:
Error: [UPLOAD_FAIL] Plugin uploaded and validated successfully. Some error occurred in plugin check-in process

It's interesting you ran across this issue, I was working to set up a new team member here on the SDK workflow for the first time and the first SDK plugin submission failed with that error as well which is a little ambiguous, however after running
li update-project and attempting to submit the plugin again it went through with no issues.
Let us know if that works for you. We're using Mac's here with NodeJS v 4.x installed, I know that Windows can be a little fidgety with the SDK these days as it's not fully supported.

We're also using Mac's here with NodeJS v 4.3.0.
I've updated my project successfully, but I still got the same result.
