Star ratings are not displayed properly

I enabled message ratings in community admin section and added widget to Blog message page using following snippet

<component id="ratings.widget.rating-enum-display" ratingSystemRef="conv:message_ratings"/>

 However it's not displayed correctly, it only displays 5 boxes. I thought it might be because custom CSS overides default styling but even after switching to one of default skins, ratings where not displayed correctly. Any ideas what might be wrong?
