Aurora recommended font and image file types and sizes

Throughout the Aurora community, you’ll find many different features that support images, such as page templates, ranks, and badges. Below, you'll find required and/or recommended sizes and file types for various features.

Avatars

  • Admins: SVG, JPG, or PNG format
  • Square image required
  • Minimum recommended dimensions: 300px square

Badges

  • PNG or SVG format
Note: SVG images might not currently load properly in email notifications.
  • Minimum recommended dimensions: 240 px square

Custom fonts

  • TTF, WOFF, or WOFF2 format

Browser icon (favicon)

  • PNG format
  • Minimum dimensions: 512 px square

Hero banner image

  • JPG or PNG format
  • Maximum recommended size: 2000 x 600 px or a similar ratio
  • An image without text or logos is best; the hero area is designed responsively and the visible area may change based on viewport.

Logo

  • PNG or SVG format
  • Size is flexible; you can update Logo Height within Designer > Page Templates > Header & Footer.

Content images

  • Blog banner images
    • Otherwise, use a large, quality image and it will be resized for you.
    • JPG or PNG
    • Recommended dimensions: 800 x 500px
  • Post images
    • JPG or PNG
    • Member has a choice on size; image will be resized on upload.

Place avatars

  • SVG format
  • 400px square

Ranks

  • PNG or SVG format
  • Uploaded images are converted to 16 pixels in height and up to 100 pixels in width wherever they appear in the community (square images will be 16 px by 16 px).

Note: Your image will be scaled to fit the supported dimensions, so we don’t recommend using a really tall image as it will be difficult to see when it’s scaled to 16 pixels high.

AbhishekIlindra We are recommending usage of GIF format sparingly and we are going to be including it as supported for rank icons soon. If I'm not mistaken, we already support GIF format for Place avatars also.

Out of all of these elements, is there anything you'd like to see GIF support for?

  • The image used for Featured Items in Knowledge (and maybe blogs?) is the tricky one. It's part of the responsive setup with featured items.

By default featured item widget uses:

    * place icon if no images in content

    * first image found in the content (usually this looks terrible in a featured item post)

    * Images found in Article Summary.
Since Article Summary doesn't appear to be used anywhere that WE care about in the community itself, I use this purely to include what was previously called Cover Photo in Classic.

My preferred sizing turns out to be a 2:1 ratio (e.g., 600x300 jpg).
If you have words on it that you don't want cut off use a margin buffer around the edge sorta like this. No precise measurements here but i'd estimate that to be about 1/8th the width on each side and ~1/5th the height on each side.
    (precision is not accuracy

  • If it's helpful, this is the image I use to test out which resolutions are showing where. I agree that the 2:1 area is the most visible, however there are other places that use a taller variant so it is good to have a bit more height.

  • Thanks Jeanine - that is certainly helpful. Shoulda thought about making something similar TBH.

I switched to 10:7 ratio as the *only* image we create/use.

I still maintain that IF the image contains text or like a CTA in it then the best way to maintain a nice look across the platform is a 'pleasantly sized' buffer within that 2:1 ratio - especially in the Featured Items Widget.

  • It looks like GIFs aren't a supported file format, is that correct? We're wanting to use them in the body of posts and blogs/articles but running into issues.

  • Hi everyone,

I'm working with our internal design team on the homepage banner and page layout templates and they're asking fro specific dimensions. Above it states for the homepage dimensions:

    • Maximum recommended size: 2000 x 600 px or a similar ratio

Is there a specific size? I can't find a specific size for page templates neither. Any and all help is appreciated!
