The following is the REST API call for getting the rating type of the contest:
/boards/id/<CONTEST ID>/settings/name/contest.ratings.primary_type
Is there any such REST API call for getting the media type of the contest (Image/video/story) that is set when the contest is created?
Also can we set this media type whlie creating the contest via REST API?

have you tried with (for a user with appropriate permissions)
/boards/id/<CONTEST ID>settings/name/contest.media_type
Not sure if this is supported for contest creation via REST. You can try passing it in the post request and see if it works, I have not tried it.

http://<community>/restapi/vc/boards/id/<contest-id>/settings/name/contest.media_type
.
