Customize Featured Topics / Remove Author

Looking for a method to customize the Featured Topics widget. The primary requirement is to remove the author. I could accomplish this through CSS hacks, but, really that is a poor solution. There must be a method through the API or some other way, right? Hoping the community can help! Thanks!
