Extending the Lithium Twitter application with custom Twitter REST API Calls

Hi guys,

If we've set up the twitter integration in the admin plug-in and are pointing at a valid corp twitter account, can we make our own custom calls to the Twitter REST API? We'd like to do a few custom twitter implementations, and I don't think the twitter stream object is the right tool for the job.
