User authentication failed when using API session key authentication

Hey folks, trying to use the API Session Keys, providing username and password and getting the authentication failed message. I have validated the username and password by copying and pasting the text into the login on the community site.  I have also validated the user I'm trying to log in from has Make REST API calls with read access and Make REST API calls with modify access granted. Any thing else I am missing? 

Make REST API calls that modify data in the community. (Default = Deny; recommended for Admins)

    Ah   "You should contact Lithium Support about having a non-SSO login created for your stage and production sites." leaving this post up in case others run into this issue.  Found this buried in a thread that wasn't easy to understand the issue. Hope this helps others.
